“So many people live within unhappy circumstances and yet will not take the initiative to change their situation because they are conditioned to a life of security, conformity, and conservatism, all of which may appear to give one peace of mind, but in reality nothing is more dangerous to the adventurous spirit within a man than a secure future. The very basic core of a man’s living spirit is his passion for adventure. The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences, and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun.”—Jon Krakauer, Into the Wild (via fuckyeahexistentialism)
“Be impeccable. I have told you this dozens of times. To be impeccable means to put your life on the line in order to back up your decisions, and then to do quite a lot more than your best to realize these decisions. When you are not deciding anything, you are merely playing roulette with your life in a helter-skelter way.”—Don Juan (Dreaming 155)
Anyone who sold you GOT as “LOTR with tits” fell victim to the marketing scheme that HBO set up. It’s that simple. They’re also huge idiots who bought an easy answers and threw it up all over you. Besides the whole “world building” genre thing, I’m not so sure they compare all that well. The show didn’t feel the need to add the entire depth (yeah, I know it may be a stretch to say that about fantasy books, but it’s there, if you ever want to read them) of the book series. It’s all thrusting plot, and nothing else. It cared more about its amazing story/cliff hangers and costumes than it did about translating the interesting things about its characters from page to screen. That’s why it’s a mediocre show. I mean, I liked parts of it, but if I hadn’t read the books, I’m not sure how it would have made me give two shits about any of the characters.
